About the Art
Winslow Homer’s The Fox Hunt (1893) is one of the most important works in 19th-century American art and a defining example of American realism. Painted in Prouts Neck, Maine, the large oil on canvas shows a solitary fox trudging through deep snow as crows circle above. The dramatic scene reflects both Homer’s interest in the natural world and the Darwinian ideas of survival and struggle that shaped much of his late work.
When first exhibited in 1893, The Fox Hunt painting immediately drew attention for its ambition. At more than five feet across, it was the largest canvas Homer ever attempted. In 1894, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts purchased the work, making it the first Winslow Homer painting to enter a major public collection. This milestone helped establish Homer as a leading figure in American painting at the end of the 19th century.

Winslow Homer
Winslow Homer was an 19th-century American painter, well-known for his work in landscapes and marine subjects.
Initially finding success through commercial illustration for magazines, the mostly self-taught Homer eventually set his sights on learning the art of oil painting and watercolors.
This training was interrupted when Homer was sent to the front lines of the American Civil War. However, he used this time to gain more experience, sketching war-time scenes both chaotic and quiet.
Homer would eventually turn these sketches into beautiful paintings, adding to his far reaching subject matter which touched on everything from sporting art, the hardships of war, and then to more hopeful post-war subject matter and the innocence and nostalgia of childhood.

What size print should I order?
The size of your print largely depends on where you want to hang it. For art hung over a sofa or a bed choose a print which is 75% the length of the furniture.
For example, if your sofa measures 80 inches in length you’d want a print that is at least 55 inches. For over the bed placement, measure the length of the headboard.
If you are hanging a print over the fireplace, however, it generally looks best when you choose a print that is the same width as the opening of the fireplace.
Though, sometimes a print that is the length of the mantle can also look nice.
When choosing wall art for a mostly empty wall, the print should take up 60% of the available space, so for an 8 foot wall you’d want a 55-60 inch print.
If there are other items filling part of the space, like furniture, you may want to go smaller so things look more balanced.
