About the Art
This painting of deer in snow captures the quiet beauty of a winter woodland scene. Created in 1874, it reflects the 19th-century interest in realistic wildlife art, when painters began portraying animals in their natural habitats.
Paintings like this were part of a broader European tradition of wildlife art that combined artistic skill with documentation of nature. They were valued for both their decorative appeal and their ability to bring the outdoors inside, allowing viewers to appreciate the beauty of forest life during a time of growing awareness of the natural world.

Julius Arthur Thiele
Julius Arthur Thiele was a German painter celebrated for his detailed depictions of animals and landscapes, especially deer set within forest and winter scenes. Born in Dresden, he trained at the Dresden Academy under Ludwig Richter, later refining his skills at the Munich Academy with Julius Hübner, and finally at Düsseldorf under the noted animal painter Christian Kröner. This combination of academic influences shaped his precise draftsmanship and strong sensitivity to natural settings.
Thiele built his reputation on works that combined lifelike portrayals of wildlife with atmospheric backdrops. He was particularly drawn to woodland and winter landscapes, where deer and game animals were shown in harmony with their environment. His use of light, texture, and season gave his canvases a quiet, contemplative quality, setting him apart from more dramatic hunting imagery of the time. After a period living in Vienna following his marriage in 1882, Thiele settled permanently in Munich, where he became active in the city’s artistic circles, including the Munich Artists’ Cooperative.

What size print should I order?
The size of your print largely depends on where you want to hang it. For art hung over a sofa or a bed choose a print which is 75% the length of the furniture.
For example, if your sofa measures 80 inches in length you’d want a print that is at least 55 inches. For over the bed placement, measure the length of the headboard.
If you are hanging a print over the fireplace, however, it generally looks best when you choose a print that is the same width as the opening of the fireplace.
Though, sometimes a print that is the length of the mantle can also look nice.
When choosing wall art for a mostly empty wall, the print should take up 60% of the available space, so for an 8 foot wall you’d want a 55-60 inch print.
If there are other items filling part of the space, like furniture, you may want to go smaller so things look more balanced.
